Getting ready for Kitchen and Bath Month

When it comes to designing a kitchen, bath or any kind of room in your home, there are some things that can change the feel of the space entirely. Countertops are a prime example. Most people will spend time selecting material, colors, styles and designs to make their rooms look new and refreshed.

90% of homeowners say countertops are the first item they look to change when renovating their home. Changing your countertops can give you a whole new look without having to re-paint or install new flooring – and can have a big impact. If you are like most homeowners, you’re probably wondering, how do I get started? Or, how do you know what types of options are available? Well the good news is that this article will cover all these questions and more. So read on for answers!

Begin by Planning

If you are thinking about new countertops, your first step is to begin planning. At Cutting Edge Countertops, we encourage you to view our Inspiration Gallery, along with our Live Inventory to get a feel for what material you may like for your space.

If you are replacing your countertops, we encourage you to take rough dimensions of your current tops. Or, if you are getting new cabinets, it is helpful to have the cabinet dimensions. Then, give us a call to schedule an appointment where one of our experienced Design Consultants will personally meet with you to learn about your project and help you in selecting a countertop material type, color and finish perfect for your lifestyle and design preferences. As we move through the details of your project, our experienced Design Consultant will offer their product knowledge and inspire with ideas and on-trend information.

Start Small

Some homeowners like to start with a small project such as updating an existing bathroom vanity top, or giving a laundry room or mudroom a facelift. Adding a new countertop will update the look of the space, without having to undergo a complete remodel.

Cutting Edge Countertops offers a variety of countertop materials including natural stone (granite, quartzite, marble and soapstone), quartz and compact surface. Explore what material type is best for how you use your space. The possibilities are endless!

Consider your Sink

Updating your sink can be one of the easiest ways to modernize your space. Cutting Edge Countertops offers a variety of sinks — from classic to contemporary — and can be paired with almost any cabinet style or countertop material. Envisioning how a new sink can change the look and feel of your kitchen or bathroom has never been easier.  You can easily customize the space of your dreams to show how your new countertops will look with AI tools that make your imagination a reality.

Spruce up your Surroundings

You must think carefully about the surrounding area if you want your home to come to life. For modern homes, you want to keep things simple and sophisticated and can choose a subtle, neutral wallpaper or a statement monotone paint color. Find inspiration in this year’s Color of the Year.

Another element that plays a part in modern homes is the focus on lines. Your countertops are great for adding depth and texture to the space, so you don’t need to flood the room with hundreds of decorations.

You can use the countertops as a focal point to draw attention to the linear structure and layout of the room. And, if you feel like adding a dramatic touch,  you can opt for a statement stone that is sure to add a certain flare for anyone bold enough.

Ultimately, the best way to show off your new countertops is to keep the space open and have lots of natural light. Ideally, you can leave the windows open and have the sunlight streaming in throughout the day.

October is Kitchen & Bath Month and  is all about visual inspiration. As you flip through your favorite magazine or home decor website, be sure to take photos or clip your favorites. Creating a refreshed look at any time of the year can feel like a breath of fresh air – and Cutting Edge Countertops offers many styles and resources for your project, whether it be large or small. Let us help you achieve your dream space. Contact us today to start planning your next home project!

Using Stone Beyond Countertops – Fireplaces, Outdoor Kitchens and More.

Naturally, stone materials have been used in homes for years. If you take note of your home today, most likely you will find some kind of stone serving as a countertop in your kitchen, or in your bathroom vanity. Due to varying degrees of durability, versatility and manageability, natural and engineered stone has become a staple in most kitchens and bathrooms. While objectively, these are the most common places to incorporate natural stone, quartz or compact surface,  they all share one important trait : they shouldn’t be limited to countertop projects. Whether it be a fireplace surround, outdoor kitchen or mudroom,  using stone beyond the kitchen or bathroom can help elevate and transform your space.

Fireplace Surround

Add some personality to your living area by creating an accent fireplace surround. Granite is extremely durable and resistant to heat, making it ideal for wood-burning fireplaces. Plus the wide variety of colors and patterns allow you to customize your fireplace to your needs.

If your home opts for gas or electric fireplaces, quartz can add a beautiful, timeless aesthetic to your home. Quartz is an engineered stone and can mimic marble veining, without having to worry about maintenance.

Outdoor Kitchen

Outdoor gatherings have never been more popular, and incorporating stone into your outdoor space makes the area even more inviting. Granite is ideal for high-traffic areas, as the scratch and stain-resistance can withstand nearly any weather condition.

Our compact surface stone also makes for a great outdoor installation. Made from a sophisticated mixture of raw materials used in glass, porcelain tiles and quartz surfaces, compact surfaces are incredibly durable, making them perfect for outdoor environments. This engineered material also withstands high levels of heat, and is very easy to maintain.

Mudroom

Like any other stone placement, location is the biggest determinant of what stone best fits your needs. With mudrooms, you’re likely to expect a lot of traffic, with the coming and going of your household. The durability and low maintenance of quartz and compact surface alike make either of these stones a fabulous option to include in your mudroom. A seating area, countertop space or backsplash, stone accents in a mudroom can transform the look and feel of an otherwise underestimated area.

Plus, depending upon the design, smaller pieces of stone called remnants can be used to elevate the look. Using remnants allows you to save on your project while incorporating a luxurious finish.

Using stone in your home doesn’t have to stop at the most conventional uses. Whether you are considering a  small or large project, Cutting Edge Countertops can help you design your home to fit your needs and match your aesthetic. We have been in business since 2006, and offer an extensive selection of granite, marble, quartzite, soapstone, quartz and compact surface with a range of colors to compliment any design. Our team takes great pride in their combined experience to bring your vision to life.  Contact us today to see for yourself how stone can enhance your home.

Summer Looks For Your Home

Summer Looks For Your Home: Stay Within The 2022 Trends

Did you know $15,000 is the average price of a home renovation? Don’t worry if you’re on a strict budget, we are going to show you various changes that you can make in your home to create a sense of newness while staying within your budget.

Renovating your home is a great way to refresh and create a space you love. If your home is outdated or you’re ready for a change, you’ve come to the right place to learn about the latest trends to add to your home.

Outdoor Spaces

Following the pandemic, people wanted to spend as much time outside as possible. There are ways to transform your outdoor space such as a pool or outdoor shower, or even a fire pit and a hot tub.

Incorporating an outdoor kitchen is a great way to feel like you have an outdoor escape without leaving your home. Homeowners are gravitating toward the idea of building a simple outdoor entertainment area with a kitchen countertop, grill and other small pleasures to transform a backyard into a dream oasis.

Creating Bold Spaces

Believe it or not, bold wallpaper is a 2022 trend you don’t want to miss. We aren’t talking about old, outdated, yellowing wallpaper. Bright colors and prints are in! People are using color to express themselves or adding compact surfaces on shower walls or bringing a creative aspect into a space by finishing off a table with a granite or marble top.

Cutting Edge Countertops offers a wide selection of materials including granite, quartz, marble, soapstone, quartzite and compact surface. Contact Cutting Edge Countertops to determine which material is best for your shower wall applications, bathroom vanities, laundry rooms and more.

Going Green

While it might seem hard to believe green is one of the popular trends in 2022, its fresh and natural characteristics draw homeowners to its warm appeal. Bringing green into a space provides a sense of welcoming and belonging into a home and also symbolizes new growth.

Another popular option is to update your kitchen countertops with natural stone, as these surfaces represent the beauty of mother nature and offer an option for a one-of-a-kind stone.

Sustainability

When you think of green, you may also think of sustainability. Solar panels, new windows, and updated irrigation systems are all on the rise, too. People are quickly realizing that making their homes more sustainable is pretty easy and it can often save you money in the long run!

Home Offices

Now that many people are working from home, offices are a must. People are tired of working out of the guest room and are converting extra spaces into home offices.

Creating a space you love to be in will help get you through the work day. Whether you love bold and bright colors or prefer natural tones in your workspace, a home office is a must in 2022.

Windows and Mirrors

Another home renovation project that’s easy is adding mirrors. Large mirrors create a space that feels bigger than it actually is. They also can help open up the room to feel more light and airy, which is perfect for rooms in the home that have little to no windows.

Adding windows is a bigger project than just buying mirrors, but people are using this idea to transform their homes. As we’ve seen with a few other trends, capturing the outdoor-feel inside is what people want. When adding windows or upgrading existing ones will allow natural light to enter the home and add a feeling of openness.

Trends in 2022

Kitchen Countertop Cleaning Tips

Eager to make a fresh start, but not sure how to get your kitchen in shape? It’s easy to overlook your kitchen countertops when it comes to cleaning, but these spaces can be a breeding ground for germs. Make sure you are making the most of your cleaning efforts by following these simple tips for getting your cleaning done quickly and efficiently. Once you’re finished, you’ll enjoy a sparkling kitchen and have more time to relax in front of an open window with a refreshing beverage.

How To Clean Quartz Countertops

Quartz is a man-made, durable material for kitchen countertops. Strong, stain resistant and heat resistant, your kitchen countertop will last you for years. However, quartz does still require some care to keep it looking its best. Here are some tips on how to keep your countertop clean:

  • Use only cleaning products that are designed specifically for quartz surfaces
  • For daily cleaning, use an ammonia-free glass cleaner or any non-abrasive household cleaner that does not contain lemon, ammonia or bleach as they can damage the surface of the quartz
  • Use mild liquid soap, warm water and a soft cloth to remove most residues from your quartz countertop
  • Wipe up spills immediately from your quartz surface

Arctic
Lusso

Does Quartz Stain?

Quartz countertops are unlikely to stain because it is a hard material and is non-porous, meaning liquids won’t be absorbed into the surface of your countertop the way they might if you spilled on unsealed natural stone countertops such as marble. Although quartz countertops have a high stain resistance, they are not completely stained proof as some food substances can leave a moderate to very faint stain behind. To prevent staining, any spills, dirt, grease or oils should be wiped up quickly to reduce the chance of a stain forming.

Countertop Protection Tips

  • Do not place hot items out of the oven or stove directly on the stone surface. Additionally, heat-generating appliances, such as slow cookers, can cause some stones to become discolored or crack. Always protect your top by placing a trivet or hot pad to allow for airflow under the hot item.
  • Avoid chopping or slicing directly on the stone countertop to prevent scratches and dulling your knives. Always use a cutting board.
  • Use placemats and coasters to protect your surface from discoloration and staining.
  • Do not stand or sit on stone countertops. Some stones may crack when excessive weight is applied.

Can I use bleach on my countertop?

We don’t recommend using bleach or any other chemical cleaners to clean your countertops. Bleach and other harsh chemicals can damage the surface of your countertop, breaking down the resin and causing discoloration. They can also wear down your countertop’s surface, leaving it vulnerable to spills.

Are there specific cleaning products I should use?

Most residue can be removed using a simple routine of wiping down your countertops with a soft cloth and warm water. If your countertops are particularly grimy, you may add mild liquid dish soap to the water; however, soap is not always necessary.
Products such as MORE™ Surface Care offers a great selection of stone-safe options such as the Stone & Quartz Cleaner + Protector. This cleaner can be purchased in any of the Cutting Edge Countertops showrooms.

Planning to shop for countertops and cabinetry

kitchen countertops

As you begin to shop for cabinets and countertops it is important you plan properly to keep your kitchen or bathroom renovation on track.  We would advise that you have the framework of your cabinets finalized prior to selecting your countertops, so you know the dimensions and measurements of your space. Please bring all of your cabinet drawings and measurements with you to your appointment as this will help greatly in pulling together all of the project details for your kitchen or bathroom countertop design.

We highly recommend after you place the order for your cabinets that you also order your countertops. This will allow you to secure measure and install dates that align with when your cabinets are installed, to keep things moving quickly so that your countertop can be fabricated and installed soon after.

Planning for your in-home remodeling

kitchen countertop sink installation

Once you have finalized your design elements and placed your order, our team will schedule a time to get started on your kitchen remodeling project in your home.

The creation of your countertops begins with a template that will be designed after the cabinets are installed. After the template, your countertops will be fabricated. Lastly, the countertop installers will return to your home and install your countertops on top of your cabinets.

Prior to install, old countertops need to be removed completely before our team arrives at your home. While you can certainly do this on your own, Cutting Edge Countertops is happy to offer tear-out and removal services. If you choose to add this on to your project scope we will be able to carefully remove your old countertops for you. To ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible, our experienced countertop installation team takes the necessary precautions to avoid any damage to surrounding areas. At the end of the day the old countertops will be removed from the cabinets and hauled away.

On the day of your installation, you can expect at least two Cutting Edge Countertops installers who will deliver the prepared countertop and put it in place. Depending on the job size, it may require more people. To help this day go as smoothly as possible, clear the pathway for the installation team so they may easily enter your home.

Post countertop installation planning

After your beautiful new tops are installed there are a few more steps to take to get your kitchen or bath back to fully functioning. You will need to plan to schedule a plumber to reconnect the water source. At Cutting Edge Countertops we do offer plumbing services to our customers for your convenience and are happy to provide this service if you would like to include it in your project with us.

An electrician will also need to come and reconnect drains, water, gas and electrical hookups after your countertop installation is complete. This will generally happen a day or two after installation so that the countertops have time to set. If you are also planning to install a backsplash, that should be scheduled after the countertops have been installed. After a good cleaning your kitchen will be ready to go! While this process requires a certain amount of prep work and attention, the finished product is well worth it! You are creating a space that you and your family will love for years to come.

Be sure to contact our team or visit one of our showrooms located in Troy, Wixom, Perrysburg, S. Indianapolis and Noblesville if you have any additional questions. You can also find out more information about countertops on our blog!

How To Prepare For Stone Countertops

Upgrading your home with natural stone countertops is a thrilling home renovation project. The first step to bring your vision to life is choosing the right material for your lifestyle and decor. Next, you will get ready for the installation and if you have never installed countertops before you may not know how to prepare. Today we are breaking down how to prepare for the installation, what you can expect during and after the installation is complete.

Pre-Installation Prep

nUCDcmQdmIymPVpAh Screen Shot at .. PM

The first step is having a measurer come to your home. They will take measurements of your entire room so the fabricator can fit the stone to your unique space. Prior to templating your fabricator will also need to know the exact make and model of any sinks, faucets and appliances that will come in contact with the countertop. Other design details such as edge details, backsplashes and rear wall treatments should also be discussed.

After the template is finished and approved, the stone will be cut and fabricated into the countertop at the workshop and the installation date will be set. If you have old countertops already in place they will need to be removed prior to the installation. This will ensure there is enough time to make repairs if anything becomes damaged in the process.

Installation

The big day is here! Expect at least two installers who will deliver the prepared countertop and put it in place. Depending on the job size, it may require more people. To help this day go as smoothly as possible, try to clear the pathway for the installation team so they may easily enter your home. It is also a good idea to remove any valuables or breakables from the area.

Installations can take anywhere from four to eight hours. Larger projects may take more than a day. A strong adhesive will be used to cement the pieces together if the countertop has seams.  Then the countertops are adhered to the cabinets.

Post-Installation

UFzvfeSFSWlboXKtys N.E. Catawba Rd. Port Clinton Oh. NEW KASHMIR WHITE GRANITE

Once the installation is complete, you will need to schedule a plumber to come and reconnect the water source, an electrician to reconnect drains, water, gas, and electrical hookups. This will generally happen the day after installation so that the countertops have time to set. If you will also be installing a backsplash that should be scheduled after the countertops have been installed.

After a good cleaning, your kitchen will be ready to go! While this process requires a certain amount of prep work and attention the finished product is well worth it! You are investing in a piece that will last for years to come with the proper care.

Have more questions about the installation process? Contact us or schedule a design session! Our team will be happy to assist you.

Transformation Begins at The Surface

Countertop Options Galore

If you can visualize it, we can create it! From eye-catching kitchens to picture-perfect powder rooms, Cutting Edge Countertops is qualified to suit your design style and needs. Whether your preference is timelessly traditional or stunningly sleek, we can help you create the perfect environment to truly transform your home or commercial space.

But how do you choose a type of stone? The selection process can be hard with our wide range of surfaces. Take a look at the characteristics of each stone below to help you decide which surface will be best for your lifestyle or business. Of course, if you still have questions, we’re here to help answer them so give us a call or come visit us!

Natural Stone (Granite, Marble, Other)

One of a Kind

Due to its origin from the earth, natural stone radiates very unique design that is one-of-a-kind. Its veining and speckled details cannot be truly matched by any other manufactured surface (although there are some that come pretty close!). Each stone is different from the rest, making every piece exclusive.

Durability (Moderate-High)

Overall, natural stone is considered to be a very durable stone, but it mostly depends on the type of surface. Granite is more durable than marble because it is composed of a harder substance. Therefore, granite is less susceptible to chips and scratches. It’s also great for outdoor use too.

Stain Resistant (Low-Moderate)

Because natural stone is a porous material, if it is not sealed upon installation, it will absorb liquids and is likely to stain. However, if sealed properly, it is moderately stain resistant. If you have a darker surface, stains are typically not seen. Softer and lighter material, such as marble, has a higher chance of absorbing and showing stains.

Heat Resistant (High)

With its strong durability, comes a high tolerance to heat. All natural stones are great for kitchen countertops because you do not have to worry about placing a boiling hot pan atop the counter. They are simply stress free!

Scratch Resistant (Moderate-High)

Natural stone is just as scratch resistant as it is durable. It is a strong material and you will rarely find a scratch on the surface. You’re more than welcome to use sharp knives on granite, but be aware that this will dull your knives and could more quickly wear down the sealer.

Low Maintenance

Overall, natural stone is very low maintenance. It is easy to clean and it does not require constant upkeep.

Quartz

Consistent Color

Because quartz is a manufactured product, quartz can be found in a wide range of colors including natural hues as well as vibrant bold options. Each slab design resembles the next, so you can be sure that your color choice will be the same as a sample and that if your project is larger and requires more than one slab, the material will match perfectly.

Durability (High)

Quartz is one of the strongest materials on the market. You will almost never have to worry, because it is a product made from one of the hardest minerals on earth, and can therefore withstand day-to-day activity.

Stain Resistant (High)

Because it is manufactured, quartz is a non-porous material, which means that no liquids can seep through. Thus, quartz does not absorb any unwanted bacteria and does not stain.

Heat Resistant (High)

Another benefit to having quartz countertops is its high ability to resist heat, although we do always suggest using hot pads or trivets to keep your countertop always looking as good as new.

Scratch Resistant (High)

Quartz will not scratch, as it is extremely durable. Don’t worry about needing a cutting board – you can use sharp knives right on the surface! But be aware, cutting atop this material will dull your knives (so we do still suggest using them!).

Low Maintenance

Durability (Moderate)

Compared to other surfaces in the market, solid surfaces are moderately durable. They can withstand much of the day to day activities, but be careful about the heavy objects that are placed atop!

Stain Resistant (High)

Solid surface countertops are stain resistant because of its non-porous nature. No need to worry about wine spills or lemon juice – you can simply wipe away the mess and you surface will still appear squeaky clean!

Heat Resistant (Moderate)

Like other material, solid surfaces can withstand heat to a certain degree. However, this isn’t the best product to place extreme heat on. You can easily damage the beauty of your countertop if placing a hot pot and pan, or in opposition, can crack the surface if placing extremely cold objects atop.

Scratch Resistant (Moderate)

Solid surface countertops are softer than quartz, so please take out your cutting board when meal prepping. If you take a sharp knife to the surface, it is possible to cut a deep scratch into the surface, leaving your countertop noticeably rough. Thankfully, you can call a professional to remove the scratches to return your surface back to normal.

Laminate countertops are made up of layers of plastic that are bonded to particleboard or kraft paper to create a solid surface. Because it is manufactured to fit a specific look, these countertops come in a wide variety of colors, textures and patterns.

Durability (Low)

Although laminate is a very good choice when choosing a countertop within a tight budget, its durability is very low, making it a difficult surface to keep untouched.

Stain Resistant (Moderate)

Laminate countertops cannot be considered stain proof, but they are definitely stain-resistant. If taken care of properly and not exposed to extreme acidic liquids, laminate surfaces will not reveal unwanted discoloring.

Heat Resistant (Low)

Similar to its stain-resistant capabilities, laminate countertops are not heat resistant but can, in fact, endure a low amount of heat. If limited, the surface will be able to withstand warm temperatures, but make sure that nothing too hot comes in contact or your countertop will be damaged!

Scratch Resistant (Moderate)

Laminate countertops are eligible to get scratched if treated unproperly, but luckily, professionals can easily remove scratches (if the size of the scratch is not extreme).
